連続講義「アメリカ映画における時間とパフォーマンス」

映画批評家クリス・フジワラ氏による連続講義です。各回、アメリカ映画の作家を一人とりあげ、複数の作品からの抜粋上映を交えつつ作家論を展開していきます。講義の前に、当日の講義に関連した作品の参考上映も予定していますので、ご都合のおつきになる方はその時間帯からご参加下さい。

TIME AND PERFORMANCE IN AMERICAN CINEMA

The American cinema is rich in personal conceptions of time and performance. Each great auteur has distinctive ways of moving a story through time, of distributing time across space, of conveying feelings of different densities of time. And each auteur has distinctive ways of working with performance, of letting the time of a film be felt through the reactions of a character or an actor, of making the character and the actor reveal themselves over time. Through the treatment of time and performance, a director projects a personal style and a specific social attitude.
This series of presentations will explore the creative tensions of time and performance in the work of several American directors, using excerpts from films to facilitate a detailed examination of various qualities of time and various ways of presenting performance.

アメリカ映画ではそれぞれの映画作家が時間とパフォーマンスについての自身のコンセプトを豊かに発達させて来た。一人一人の偉大な映画作家が、時間のなかで物語をどう動かしていくのか、空間のなかにどう時間を配するのか、異なった時間それぞれの密度をどう伝えるのかに、独特のやり方を持っている。そして一人一人の映画作家に、演技についてどう演出していくのか、登場人物あるいは俳優のリアクションを通じて映画の時間をどう感じさせていくのか、時間の流れのなかで人物と俳優がどう自分自身を露にして行くのかについての、独特のやり方がある。時間と演技をどう扱うのか、そのなかに映画監督は自分個人のスタイルと、自分自身に固有の社会的な態度を投影していくのだ。
今回の一連の講義では、時間と演技をめぐる創造的な緊張感を、何人かのアメリカの映画監督の仕事を通じて探求していく。その作品の抜粋を参照することで具体的かつ詳細に、時間が映画のなかで持つ様々な質と、演技を映画的に見せていく様々なやり方を、検証していきたい。

第10回「アンソニー・マン　Anthony Mann」

10. Anthony Mann
Best known for his Westerns starring James Stewart, Anthony Mann also directed a distinctive series of crime thrillers in the late 1940s and did excellent work in other genres. In Mann's cinema, the frame is filled with hidden traps and dangers, which reflect the obsessional motives and points of weakness in his protagonists' psyches. Mann's best films sustain a double movement, taking their characters on a complex itinerary through changing landscapes while concentrating with increasing severity and abstraction on symbolic and internal conflicts.

10. アンソニー・マン
ジェームズ・スチュアート主演の西部劇で特に有名なアンソニー・マンだが、40年代後半には一連の優れた犯罪スリラーを監督しており、他のジャンルでも傑出した作品を残している。マンの映画では、構図は隠された罠と危険に満ちあふれ、そこに主人公の強迫観念じみた動機と心理的欠点が浮かび上がる。マンの傑作は二重の運動によってなりたっている。登場人物を風景が次々と移りゆく複雑な旅路へと連れ出し、さらに、厳格さと抽象力をもって象徴的かつ内的な葛藤にも焦点をあわせていくのである。

第11回「ジョージ・キューカー　George Cukor」

11. George Cukor
George Cukor's films are adventures in creating public identities. As they move through the romantic or frightening worlds that Cukor delineates with great imagination and skill, his characters try to remain true to - and to perfect - the natures they have fashioned for themselves. Meetings, ceremonies, theatrical performances, and other events in Cukor's films are tests of the ability to perform one's own being.

11. ジョージ・キューカー
ジョージ・キューカーの映画は、パブリックな自己像を創造していく冒険である。キューカーが卓越した想像力と技術で描き出すロマンチックな、あるいは恐るべき世界を通過しながら、登場人物たちは自分自身に忠実であろうとすると同時に、自分自身を完成させていく。その自分自身とはつまり、彼らが自分に対して作り出していくもっとも自分らしいあり方だ。キューカーの映画における出会いや社会儀礼、舞台に立つことなどの出来事は、人物たちが自分らしく振る舞う能力を試す機会となるのである。

第12回「ロバート・ロッセン　Robert Rossen」

12. Robert Rossen
Robert Rossen is the great director of the American pathology of winning. He works in an experimental way, incessantly breaking images apart and recombining them. Rossen explores self-contained worlds with their own social codes: gambling dens, the world of boxing, the center of a political machine, a mental institution. In these worlds, time is slowed down and sometimes stands still, as Rossen's cinema turns inward toward the examination of conscience and of the enigma of personality.

12. ロバート・ロッセン
ロバート・ロッセンは、「勝利すること」というアメリカにとりついた病についての偉大な映画作家である。彼の映画作りは実験的であり、常に映像を分断し解体すると同時に、それらを再結合させていく。ロッセンが探求する世界は、賭博場、ボクシング、政界の中枢、精神病院など、それぞれに固有の社会的なコードをもった自己充足した社会だ。ロッセンの映画が人間の良心と人格の謎の検証へと向かって内省化していくにつれ、そうした社会的な場に流れる時間は引き延ばされていき、ときに静止する。
