映画批評家クリス・フジワラ氏による連続講義です。各回、アメリカ映画の作家を一人とりあげ、複数の作品からの抜粋上映を交えつつ作家論を展開していきます。講義の前に、当日の講義に関連した作品の参考上映も予定していますので、ご都合のおつきになる方はその時間帯からご参加下さい。

国際映画批評家連盟Webマガジン「Undercurrent」編集長。著書に「Jacques Tourneur: The Cinema of Nightfall」等。2003年、小津安二郎生誕百年記念国際シンポジウムのパネリストをつとめた。第7回東京フィルメックス・コンペティション審査員でもある。現在、オットー・プレミンジャーの評伝を執筆中。

TIME AND PERFORMANCE IN AMERICAN CINEMA

The American cinema is rich in personal conceptions of time and performance. Each great auteur has distinctive ways of moving a story through time, of distributing time across space, of conveying feelings of different densities of time. And each auteur has distinctive ways of working with performance, of letting the time of a film be felt through the reactions of a character or an actor, of making the character and the actor reveal themselves over time. Through the treatment of time and performance, a director projects a personal style and a specific social attitude.
This series of presentations will explore the creative tensions of time and performance in the work of several American directors, using excerpts from films to facilitate a detailed examination of various qualities of time and various ways of presenting performance.

アメリカ映画における時間とパフォーマンス

アメリカ映画ではそれぞれの映画作家が時間とパフォーマンスについての自身のコンセプトを豊かに発達させて来た。一人一人の偉大な映画作家が、時間のなかで物語をどう動かしていくのか、空間のなかにどう時間を配するのか、異なった時間それぞれの密度をどう伝えるのかに、独特のやり方を持っている。そして一人一人の映画作家に、演技についてどう演出していくのか、登場人物あるいは俳優のリアクションを通じて映画の時間をどう感じさせていくのか、時間の流れのなかで人物と俳優がどう自分自身を露にして行くのかについての、独特のやり方がある。時間と演技をどう扱うのか、そのなかに映画監督は自分個人のスタイルと、自分自身に固有の社会的な態度を投影していくのだ。
今回の一連の講義では、時間と演技をめぐる創造的な緊張感を、何人かのアメリカの映画監督の仕事を通じて探求していく。その作品の抜粋を参照することで具体的かつ詳細に、時間が映画のなかで持つ様々な質と、演技を映画的に見せていく様々なやり方を、検証していきたい。

第13回「ジョン・フォード　John Ford」

13. John Ford
John Ford is a director of paradoxes. On the one hand, his films reject the ideology of progress: the future does not improve on the past. On the other hand, the past and its values are never restored. Rather than parables of unity, Ford's films are works of constant movement that attest to the moral necessity of homelessness and exile. As we move farther and farther away in time from Ford's films, they become more disturbing, more exciting, and more moving.

13. ジョン・フォード
ジョン・フォードは矛盾の監督である。一方で、彼の映画は進歩の思想を拒絶する――未来は過去からの改善とはなりえない。他方で、過去とその価値が復興することも決してない。フォードの映画は団結の寓話というよりは、むしろ動き続けることについてのものであり、故郷喪失と流浪の倫理的な必要性が示される。我々がフォードの映画の時代から遠ざかれば遠ざかるほど、その映画はより我々の心をかき乱し、より刺激的になり、そして一層感動的になる。

第14回「ジャック・ターナー　Jacques Tourneur」

14. Jacques Tourneur
Jacques Tourneur's cinema is one of mystery, whether he is making a horror film, a thriller, an adventure film, or a Western. The mise-en-scene of the human figure in Tourneur's films points to the primary importance of offscreen space. It also reminds us that the motives and desires of his characters can never be fully known and that we can see only fragments, often from oblique angles, of the world they inhabit. Tourneur had an immense talent for the poetic delineation of this mysterious world.

14. ジャック・ターナー
ジャック・ターナーの映画は、ホラー映画でもスリラーでも冒険映画でも西部劇でも、何よりもミステリーの映画である。ターナーの作品における人物像の演出は、画面外の空間の重要さをまず何よりも指摘する。その演出はまた、人物の動機や欲望を完全に知ることは決してできないこと、そして、彼らが住む世界で我々が見ることができるのはほんの一部に過ぎず、それもしばしば斜めから見ていることを想起させる。ターナーは、このミステリアスな世界の領域を詩的に特定する素晴らしい才能を持っているのだ。

第15回「オーソン・ウェルズ　Orson Welles」

15. Orson Welles
Through each of Orson Welles's films runs an invisible line that divides the past, controlled and unified by powerful myths, from the unstable and alienating present. This line slashes through the structures of the plots, rendering them enigmatic and absurd, through the editing of scenes, and through individual images. The modern fragmentation whose exploration Welles pioneered takes on its full value in his work from the memory of a solid and uniform past that Welles both parodies and laments.

15. オーソン・ウェルズ
オーソン・ウェルズの一本一本の映画には、強力な神話によって操作、統合された過去と、不安定でよそよそしい現在とを分つ見えない線が走っている。この一線が、シーンの編集と個々の映像を通じて謎めいて不条理化したプロットの構造を貫いているのだ。その確固たる統合された過去の記憶が、ウェルズがその先駆者となった現代的な断片化に最大の力を与え、ウェルズはそのな過去をパロディ化するとともに、喪失を嘆いてもいる。
